Point Comfort in Hampton, Virginia, stands as a powerful symbol of America's complex history. Originally inhabited by the Kecoughtan people, the area offered a natural harbor that English settlers named "Point Comfort" upon their arrival in the early 1600s. It was here, in 1619, that the first enslaved Africans were brought to English North America—a tragic and pivotal moment in American history. During the War of 1812, the British occupied Point Comfort and used it as a strategic base to launch their invasion of Washington, D.C. Later, during the Civil War, the area around Point Comfort—particularly Fort Monroe—became a refuge for enslaved people seeking freedom under Union protection. Fortifications at the site continued to play a role in coastal defense throughout the 20th century. Today, the Old Point Comfort Lighthouse still stands, serving as a beacon and reminder of Hampton's deep and layered history, from its Indigenous roots and colonial past to its roles in war, slavery, and freedom.
